The mission of AVID is to ensure that all students—especially the least-served students who are “in the middle”—succeed in rigorous curriculum, complete a college-preparatory path, enter mainstream activities of the school, increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and become educated, responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society. Accordingly, the AVID program at West Hills helps students develop the following skills: critical thinking, reading, writing, public speaking, (binder) organization, team-building, time management, collaboration, and note-taking. Other major components of the class include in-class tutorials (facilitated by college students and peer tutors), motivational guest speakers, community service, and college campus visits. Students who are interested in the class must meet the requirements outlined in the AVID Candidate Profile and be interviewed by the AVID coordinator.
