Introduction WELCOME PARENTS AND STUDENTS
DANCE 2009-2010
This year we shall be exploring dance genres of jazz, modern, ballet, hip hop, musical theatre and cultural dances. All classes will have opportunities to develop technical skills and perform in concerts. We shall be having guests artists in African, salsa, and folklorico. Dates will be annouced in class. Tenatively, 2 field trips will be planned to Grossmont College to take classes and attend a concert.
Concert Dates: TBA. There will be 6 concerts: November, December, February, March, and 2 in May. Advance/intermediate dancers must participate in at least 3 concerts. Beginning dancers may perform in any concert, but it is not a requirement for the class.
Journal Entries: The theme for this year is "Hope". The journal entries will be reflections on quotes, various dance and health articles and the textbook. All journal writings are done in class on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Guidelines for writing concert critiques: Students will be writing critiques on each dance concert. The criteria for the critiques will include discussing opinions on costumes, music, lights/sets/props, and the choreography. It is recommended that students attend the nighttime concerts on campus, in the Old Gym. If attending the concert is not possible, students will have the opportunity to see the concert during class.
Make-up Policy: Students are allowed to make-up all missed work at anytime during the semester. A hand-out is available from me which lists musicals involving various dance genres.
